For those IG projects that connect school children and elders during the school day, the government mandated curriculum is a critically important determinant in the activities the groups might undertake. Community recreation centres for older adults, and care facilities both have requirements for those under their care as well.

Planning in advance is a critical element. Educators and care home activity directors, recreation and community centre staff need to each review what their goals are for their respective students or clients, creatively selecting areas that lend themselves to cross-over activities.

All IG activity should be purposefully planned with clear

  • INTENTS (What is the intention?)
  • DESIGN (What will this look like? Where will it take place?)
  • ACTIVITIES (What will we do?)
  • EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT (How did it go? How will we know?)

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FOR PLANNING

1. SENIOR BUDDY SIGN-UP SHEET:

3. INTERMEDIATE IG STORY BOOKS

Pioneer Women of the Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii by Catherine Nelson

Five stories of remarkable women on the Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii in the 1920's and 30's. Each story is short (35 or 36 pages, large print); illustrated with photographs and maps; poses questions for discussion; and celebrates one adventure in the lives of these women. Perfect for intermediate Social Studies, or for grandparents to read to their grandchildren sharing personal experiences similar to those in the stories.
